MAGGIE MACLELLAN
Public Relations Certificate - 2009
What brought you to Humber and your program of study?
Humber’s Public Relations (PR) graduate certificate program is one of the best in Canada. When I decided to pursue a career in PR, I knew I had to apply to Humber. Its reputation in the industry is well-established, particularly for its top-notch internships. These opportunities provided me with the hands-on experience I needed to succeed early in my career.
What was your favourite Humber memory or experience?
My favourite part of Humber was the people. I remember feeling intimidated on my first day of class, surrounded by so many talented individuals I would be spending the next year with. But by the end of the first week, we were all friends—many of whom I’m still close with today, even after 15 years! The professors were also approachable and supportive. I learned so much just from hearing their stories and experiences in the field.
What was Humber's greatest impact on your personal and professional life?
Humber gave me the experience I needed to jump-start my career. When I entered the workforce, I felt prepared and confident. The hands-on experiences at Humber also encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. I credit the program for giving me the push I needed to believe in my own abilities.
What are you up to now?
I’m now the Communications Manager for the Faculty of Health Sciences at Western University in London, Ontario. In this role, I oversee strategic communications for the faculty, lead a team of four, and collaborate with communicators across the university. I love my job—no two days are the same, and I enjoy the interesting challenges and opportunities to explore new ways to solve problems.
What else do you want to share (e.g. Memorable trip; If you had a superpower; Favourite food or coffee shop; Personal and professional interests; Awards and recognition; Other milestones)?
Humber reinforced the importance of giving back to the community. Since entering the workforce, I’ve volunteered my time to help non-profit and charitable organizations share their stories. Volunteering continues to reignite my passion for the field.
