BRENT SIFTON
Funeral Service Education - 1979
What brought you to Humber and your program of study?
The Funeral Service Education course.
What was your favourite Humber memory or experience?
I tried out and successfully made Humber's tennis team in September of 1977, so I am a proud Hawk! Back then we practiced in "The Bubble." This was before the Athletic Centre was built. I enjoyed the league matches against various Toronto colleges, and then was fortunate enough to qualify for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Championships in Ottawa where I made it to the semi-finals. Our Funeral Service Education program at the North Campus was from September until Spring, and then we did In-Service training for another year at a funeral home, so I knew that was my only year on the school tennis team. I have told people over the years, if I could, I would have gone to Humber for two or three more years just to play tennis.
What was Humber's greatest impact on your personal and professional life?
I have always been a proud Humber grad.
What are you up to now?
I am the third generation President and Managing Director of the Sifton Funeral Home Limited, St. Thomas, Ontario. In our 99th year of service, our firm was founded by my grandfather in 1926. Since 1980, I have been married to Georgia, a retired museum assistant at the Elgin County Museum and a member of the funeral home support staff. We are the proud parents of Lara Wheeler (Matt) and Blake Sifton (Chloe), and take joy being the grandparents of Wynne Wheeler. In my spare time, I enjoy being a special needs tennis coach.
What else do you want to share (e.g. Memorable trip; If you had a superpower; Favourite food or coffee shop; Personal and professional interests; Awards and recognition; Other milestones)?
Back in 1977, the North Campus of Humber was still relatively small, and so were most classes. This made the adjustment of coming to "The Big City" from a small community a fairly smooth transition. The feeling was almost like a large high school, except on certain days of the week there were pub nights!
