Accounting - 2014

What brought you to Humber and your program of study?

I began working as a cashier at my uncle’s supermarket and my cousin’s Nigerian DVD store. One day, the store accountant came by, and I remember asking him what it takes to be an accountant. He said, “All you need to be good at is money and numbers.” That moment stuck with me because I had always been strong in math during high school. Since Humber was only a bus ride away, I decided to give school another try and applied to the Accounting program in Fall 2010.

What was your favourite Humber memory or experience?

My favourite memory was when I scored over 100% on my Cost Accounting midterm; everyone was looking at me like I was an alien! That moment made me realize how far I’d come. I also loved the 24/7 computer lab; I spent so many nights there studying and sometimes even sleeping between assignments. It became a second home.

What was Humber's greatest impact on your personal and professional life?

Humber taught me discipline, perseverance, and the importance of communication. The business writing courses helped me gain the confidence to express myself professionally, something that’s still helping me today when writing to leaders and advisors in my current role at Sun Life. I also learned Excel, Word, and PowerPoint in depth, which gave me an edge in every job I’ve held since. Most importantly, Humber made me more outspoken and resilient. It was also my first English-speaking school, which shaped how I interact and present myself today.

What are you up to now?

I currently work full-time at Sun Life as an Investment Client Care Representative, handling inquiries from advisors and clients about mutual funds, GICs, and other investment products. I’m doing very well in my role and may soon have a “Chat & Coffee” opportunity with the Accounting department, something I’m really looking forward to. My journey from struggling student to confident professional has been full of lessons that I now use every day at work.

What else do you want to share (e.g. Memorable trip; If you had a superpower; Favourite food or coffee shop; Personal and professional interests; Awards and recognition; Other milestones)?

My journey wasn’t easy. I was supposed to graduate in 2012, but ended up graduating in 2014 after retaking some classes and balancing part-time studies with full-time work. I even moved out on my own to stay closer to campus and stay focused. Through all the ups and downs, I never gave up. My message to students is simple: no matter how many times you fall, keep reaching for the stars. People say the sky’s the limit, but no, you can go right beyond the sky and touch the stars.

Even after all these years, I know I’m still growing. I may not be where I want to be yet, but the fire is still burning, and I will succeed one day. My day will come.
