FLORENCE MANALILI
Bachelor of Nursing - 2021
What brought you to Humber and your program of study?
I was drawn to Humber’s Nursing program because of its strong reputation for hands-on clinical experience and its focus on preparing students for real-world practice. I knew I wanted a career where I could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, and nursing offered that opportunity. Humber stood out to me for its supportive learning environment and emphasis on both clinical competence and compassionate care. It felt like the right place to build not just my skills, but also my confidence as a future nurse.
What was your favourite Humber memory or experience?
One of my most meaningful experiences at Humber was during my clinical placements. Applying what I learned in class to real patient care was both challenging and rewarding. I remember moments where patients trusted me during vulnerable times, and that reinforced why I chose this profession. Those experiences helped shape my clinical judgment, resilience, and ability to work as part of a healthcare team.
What was Humber's greatest impact on your personal and professional life?
Humber played a significant role in shaping both my professional identity and personal growth. It taught me discipline, accountability, and the importance of continuous learning. Professionally, it gave me the foundation for thinking critically, communicating effectively, and providing safe, patient-centred care. Personally, it helped me build resilience and confidence, qualities that I carry with me every day in my nursing practice.
What are you up to now?
As a UNB–Humber Nursing 2021 alumna, I completed most of my clinical placements at North York General Hospital, where I now work as a Registered Nurse. It’s a full-circle journey that reminds me how far I’ve come. I provide patient-centred care in a fast-paced environment, working closely with interdisciplinary teams and continuously growing through new challenges each day.
What else do you want to share (e.g. Memorable trip; If you had a superpower; Favourite food or coffee shop; Personal and professional interests; Awards and recognition; Other milestones)?
Nursing has taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of being fully present during people’s most vulnerable moments. To those just starting, trust yourself, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Growth comes from experience, reflection, and continuous learning. If I could tell my younger self anything, it would be this: you don’t need to have everything figured out. Just keep showing up, you’ll become the nurse you’re meant to be.
