ANITA BROWN

Practical Nursing - 1991

What brought you to Humber and your program of study?

I chose Humber because of its strong nursing program. At the time, Humber was still based on the Osler School of Nursing format. Humber has a strong reputation for graduating well-trained nurses with strong clinical and thinking skills, thanks to its extensive hands-on learning, from clinical labs to clinical days in the hospital.

What was your favourite Humber memory or experience?

One of my favourite memories would be connecting with my classmates, learning and growing together. Especially in clinical labs, where we were all learning the same thing at the same time, we honed our skills before going to the hospital for clinical days.

What was Humber's greatest impact on your personal and professional life?

My instructors had the greatest impact on my personal and professional life. It made me a stronger person, helped me gain confidence in myself and in my role as a nurse. Provided with a sense of responsibility, sound time management skills and strong critical thinking skills. Two things a have always remembered from my instructions 1. No question is ever stupid, and 2. When in doubt, seek help. This is something they always drilled into us. Still use it to this day.

What are you up to now?

I am a nurse going into my 35th year. Have been a surgical nurse for most of my career; also worked in emergency. I became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. I am a preceptor and monitor; Committee work.

What else do you want to share (e.g. Memorable trip; If you had a superpower; Favourite food or coffee shop; Personal and professional interests; Awards and recognition; Other milestones)?

I love hiking, snowshoeing, spending time with friends, and Toronto Blue Jays games
